MEET LIZ CARNEY
Hello, I’m Liz Carney.
If you’ve ever stepped inside Four Eleven Gallery, then you’ve stepped into the heart of my story—and the story of the many artists who have lived and worked at 411 Commercial Street over the years.
I grew up in this house. My mother, Madelyn Carney, bought it in 1978, drawn in by the view from the dining room window—the pier stretching into the bay, the light shifting across the water. She wasn’t an artist herself, but she believed in art. She filled this home with painters, writers, playwrights. She made room for creativity. I learned early on that beauty and truth could live side by side—and that a life in art was not only possible, but necessary.
I left Provincetown for a while—studied, traveled, explored—but I always found myself returning. There’s something magnetic about the light here, the layered histories, the freedom to be both rooted and experimental. In 2010, I returned home for good and opened Four Eleven Gallery in what had once been our family living room. What started as a studio space has grown into a gallery that features artists I deeply admire—many of them working right here on the Cape.
The mission of Four Eleven Gallery is simple but essential: to create space for work that is process-driven, thoughtful, and alive. We exhibit paintings that explore visual form, whether representational, abstract, or conceptually layered. We support artists who are engaged in making meaningful, grounded work—artists who are part of this place and conversation. Four Eleven offers a dynamic and intimate program of local Cape Cod artists, and each exhibition reflects our commitment to honoring both tradition and experimentation.
As a painter myself, I’m drawn to process. I love watching a painting reveal itself, little by little. My own work explores form, atmosphere, memory, and the push and pull between abstraction and landscape. I’m proud to exhibit my work here alongside the work of my peers—and also, most meaningfully, to continue showing the work of my mother, Madelyn. She passed away some years ago, but her presence is still in every corner of this space. She was the heartbeat of this house, and she believed in my path long before I fully did.
Four Eleven is more than a gallery—it’s a continuation of a life lived among artists, a place for conversation, exploration, and discovery. I’m honored to welcome you here.
Warmly,
Liz
