Matthew Bielen

Matthew Bielen has long been drawn to the threshold where water meets land. His work is an abstract meditation on the ocean, not just as a subject, but as a force. He works primarily in acrylic, often building layers that suggest sediment or tide lines, pouring paint and using brush and palette knife to sculpt the surface. The paint moves like water at times, but there is always an edge, a resistance.

Conceptually, images like lighthouses, swirling water, and dense fog inform the atmosphere of his paintings. There is something deeply compelling about the way coastal elements serve as symbols, guides, warnings, veils. Matthew’s paintings ask viewers to wander through visual cues, to consider what is hidden and what is revealed.

Matthew studied painting from The Museum School in Boston. Matthew carries with him the language of Robert Motherwell, Budd Hopkins, Wendelin Glatzel, and Dave Hay. Each of these artists influencing and shaping his understanding of movement, surface, and restraint.
